AI: A misnomer on both counts

Intelligence, Before It Was Marketed
The word intelligence did not originally mean cleverness, speed, or performance.
Its roots lie in the Latin intelligere: inter: between and legere: to choose, to read, to gather.
Intelligence, at its core, means “the capacity to discern”. To read between. To choose among competing meanings. Or to judge under uncertainty. It was never about correctness alone. It was about willful orientation.
An intelligent person was not the one who knew the most, but the one who could navigate complexity, hold contradiction, and act without full information while accepting the cost of being wrong. And having the willingness and clarity to correct course if necessary.
Intelligence implied agency. And agency implied responsibility. That definition has quietly eroded.
Today, intelligence is increasingly understood as the speed of processing, the volume of information, the consistency of output, statistical accuracy and explainability after the fact
In other words: performance without consequence.
What we now call “artificial intelligence” does not discern. It does not choose between meanings. It does not read between anything.
It simply predicts.
What is being manufactured is not intelligence in the original sense, but administrative fluency. The ability to generate coherent responses within predefined bounds, without judgment, intention, or stake.
Calling this intelligence is not a neutral mistake. It replaces a human capacity with a technical one, and then pretends that nothing has been lost in the process.
Artificial Intelligence Is the Wrong Word
We are calling something “intelligent” that does not understand, does not intend, and does not decide. And that mistake really matters.
What is currently marketed as artificial intelligence is not a new form of mind. It is an old administrative ideal, made fluent. A system optimized for prediction, consistency, and scale, now wrapped in language that sounds human enough for us to forget the difference. And that forgetting is not accidental.
Language has always been the shortcut. If something speaks coherently, we assume there is comprehension behind it. If it responds fluently, we assume there is judgment. If it sounds calm and confident, we assume there is authority. And none of those assumptions hold.
What we are interacting with is not intelligence, but pattern completion at scale. Recursion applied to human language, trained on vast archives of what we have already said, already thought, already normalized. It does not know what it says. It only knows what tends to follow.
And yet, it is increasingly treated as if it does.
The sophistication of these systems does not invalidate this distinction. Greater fluency, deeper statistical coherence, even convincing simulations of reasoning do not introduce stakes, agency, or consequence. They narrow the gap phenomenologically while leaving the ontological difference intact.
When Fluency Becomes the Benchmark
The shift is subtle, but decisive.
We no longer ask whether a system understands. We ask whether it performs. Whether it is accurate enough, consistent enough, fast enough, scalable enough. Whether it reduces error, removes friction or eliminates variance.
These are not criteria of intelligence. They are criteria of effective administration. What is being rewarded is not insight, but legibility. Not judgment, but predictability. Not responsibility, but alignment with predefined outcomes.
The system excels at this because it was built for it. Humans do not, because humans were never meant to be optimized this way. We hesitate. We doubt. We bring context where none is requested. We care at inconvenient moments. We refuse when refusal makes no sense on a spreadsheet.
Those traits used to be called judgment. They are now increasingly framed as noise or inefficiency. Or worse yet, stupidity, or the lack of understanding.
Direction Without Deliberation
There is another layer to this shift that rarely gets named.
The world increasingly moves in the direction pointed out by technology companies, not because they are wiser, but because they control the infrastructure through which administration now happens.
Technology no longer supports systems. It is the system.
When a small number of organizations determine how information flows and how decisions are automated or how work is coordinated, how performance is measured and how legitimacy is conferred then they do not merely provide tools.
They determine which forms of reasoning become legible, which questions can be asked at scale, and which kinds of judgment are treated as valid at all.
Not through ideology or decree, but through default.
The path that is technically easiest becomes the path that is socially normal. The option that integrates best becomes the option that feels inevitable. What cannot be expressed in the system’s language slowly stops being taken seriously.
Culture follows administration.
Administration follows technology.
And technology follows incentives that have nothing to do with human flourishing. It follows incentives that makes it more indispensible. Simple as that.
This is not conspiracy. It is just structural gravity.
Once governance, economics, education, and communication run through the same technical pipelines, those who control the pipelines shape what is possible long before anyone debates what is desirable, or even useful. In education, work, and governance, intelligence is increasingly defined by what can be processed, measured, audited, and scaled, not by what can be lived.
And when those pipelines are optimized for scale, efficiency, and predictability, intelligence itself is redefined to match. And that is already a massive reduction in what intelligence is supposed to be.
The Quiet Inversion
Tools used to extend human agency. That was the deal.
A calculator did not redefine what it meant to reason. A word processor did not redefine what it meant to write. A map did not redefine what it meant to navigate.
This time is different. What is happening now is an inversion: the tool is no longer subordinate to human judgment. It is slowly becoming the reference point against which judgment is measured. Decisions are no longer made with assistance. They are made by default elsewhere, with humans invited in at the margins to approve, to override, to take responsibility when things go wrong.
The question quietly shifts from “What do you think?” to “Why would you disagree with the system?”
Agency does not necessarily disappear but it becomes suspect.
Intelligence Reclassified as Optimization
This is where the mislabeling does real damage.
By calling this intelligence, we redefine intelligence itself. We collapse it into what machines are good at: optimization, consistency, throughput, explanation without consequence.
Under this definition, intelligence becomes that which can be administered. And once intelligence is defined this way, human qualities begin to look like defects, because they mostly don’t fit into an administrable system.
Intuition becomes bias. Judgment becomes subjectivity. Care becomes inefficiency. Hesitation becomes risk. These are all human qualities, but seen through the lens of a well administered system, they are liabilities.
The more human a response is, the less “intelligent” it appears.
This is not because humans have changed. It is because the benchmark has slowly been adjusting.
The Trade No One Announces
There is a trade being made, quietly, willingly, and at scale.
In exchange for reduced cognitive load, fewer decisions, clearer defaults and lower personal risk we give up authorship, responsibility, moral ambiguity and the burden of judgment.
This trade is attractive, especially to people who are tired. And most people are tired. It does not require coercion. It only requires exhaustion, and there’s plenty of that going around these days.
Once a system promises relief, it does not need to prove that it is right. It only needs to be easier than deciding for yourself. In a world so overwhelmed with information, contradictory stances and incomprehensible beliefs and boundaries a system like this seems to be the savior of the day.
This Is Not About AI
It is important to be precise here. This is not about machines becoming human. And it is not about humans becoming obsolete. It is about systems reaching the point where human judgment is no longer required for them to function and therefore no longer prioritized.
Administrative systems have always moved in this direction. AI is not the cause. It is the endpoint: administration that can speak, explain, justify, and recommend without needing a person at the center.
The system does not want humans gone. It just wants humans to be manageable. That means predictable. Replaceable. Auditable. Calm. Aligned.
Fluency helps with that. And AI speaks human better than most humans do.
Why This Feels Like Progress
It feels like progress because friction disappears. Decisions feel lighter when they are no longer yours. Responsibility feels smaller when it is distributed upward. Doubt feels unnecessary when there is always a recommendation available.
But meaning has never emerged from frictionless systems. Meaning comes from choosing without certainty, acting without guarantees, and carrying consequences that cannot be optimized away.
Those conditions do not scale and that is precisely why systems try to remove them.
The Cost of Getting This Wrong
Calling this intelligence does more than flatter technology. It quietly downgrades being human. If intelligence is something external, optimized, and administered, then human agency becomes optional. Almost decorative. Something you engage in when time permits, not something that life requires.
That is not liberation. It is infantilization. A world where no one feels authorized to decide without permission from a system is not more rational. It is simply easier to manage.
A Boundary, Not a Solution
This is not a call to resist technology and it is not a plea for regulation. It is not a demand to dismantle systems that cannot be dismantled. It is just a call for a boundary.
Holding that boundary is costly, unscalable, and often invisible, which is precisely why systems exert such pressure to erase it. There is a difference between living and being administered. Or worse yet, living only to facilitate the administration.
No system, however fluent, can cross that boundary for you. And no optimization can replace the cost of judgment without hollowing out what remains. We can continue to call this intelligence if we want. The system benefits from the confusion.
But the confusion has consequences. Because the moment intelligence is defined as that which can be administered, humans become the least intelligent part of their own lives.
And that is not progress. It is simply efficient.
And are we living just to facilitate efficiency? Is that all we exist for?
